Rich Rose (Scenic Designer) – As the resident scenic designer at the award-winning Back Alley Theater for several years, Rich designed numerous productions there for Artistic Directors Alan Miller and Laura Zucker (former LA County Arts Commissioner) including Jacques Brel is Alive and Well, Ringers, The Fox, In the Sweet Bye and Bye (starring Rue McLanahan) Days and Nights Within, and Found a Peanut (DramaLogue and LA Weekly awards for scenic design).
More recent credits encompass tribute gala environmental designs for film producers Jake Eberts (founder of PARTICIPANT MEDIA -- Gandhi, Dances with Wolves, The Year of Living Dangerously, A River Runs Through It) and Jeff Scholl (founder of eBay and Pivot TV, documentary producer – Citizen Four, Food Inc.) and consulting with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission on the recent multi-million-dollar renovation of the historic John Anson Ford Theater stage in Hollywood.
Current scenic designs include Lainie Kazan Presents Lainie's Cabaret -The Great American Songbook; the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts productions of the musicals Spring Awakening, Floyd Collins (BroadwayWorld nomination for best scenic design) and American Idiot (BroadwayWorld nomination for best scenic design, StageSceneLA award for Outstanding Production Design); the Mosaic Lizard Theater productions of Robin Hood and A Spider-Man Christmas; the national tours of SEVEN, In the Heat of the Night, Judgment at Nuremberg, The Mountaintop, and Steel Magnolias for LA Theater Works; at Actor's Co-op, the critically acclaimed Los Angeles productions of Joseph Stein's and Stephen Schwartz's rarely performed cult musical The Baker's Wife, Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke (Los Angeles Times CRITICS CHOICE) Our Town, A Man For All Seasons (StageSceneLA Award OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION OF A DRAMA - INTIMATE THEATER, Eddon Award Winner BEST PRODUCTION IN AN INTIMATE SPACE) the world premiere of a new script for A Body of Water (StageSceneLA award for Outstanding Production Design, Robby Award nomination for Best Scenic Design) and TORNADO (world premiere).
Rich's other design works include Other Desert Cities and The Chalk Garden, part of the 2017 and 2018 Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum summer rep seasons; an engagement of Judgment at Nuremberg at the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts; Rabbit Hole (performed in Mandarin) at the Guangzhou (China) Centre for Dramatic Arts where, in residence, he designed this set for their 2018 production season. And Andy Warhol’s Tomato (Los Angeles Times CRITIC’S CHOICE, LA Stage Alliance “O” RECOMMENDED, Los Angeles Times TOP 10 weekly for 5 months, LA Stage Raw TOP TEN) American Hamlet (cancelled due to COVID shutdown) and STALLED, the first staging of a world premiere musical — all three at the Pacific Resident Theatre.
A Professor Emeritus in the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, Rich is also the author of books on computer-aided design, drafting, and sketching for the stage published by Penguin / Random House.
